Wow remember this thing? I kind of just stopped doing this (not for any real reason) but surprisingly, there were a few requests to bring this bad boy back so why not.
Have you ever seen a movie and thought....wow that was really dumb..but I liked it a lot...? Pacific Rim definitely falls into that category and you don't really have to go beyond the premise of the movie to see that. The year is 2020, and giant monsters called "Kaiju" (Japanese for giant monster) have risen from this breach beneath the Pacific Ocean that crosses over from one dimension to the other and are here to go medieval on our ass. World leaders band together and decide to counter the Kaiju by creating massive robots called "Jaegers" (Jaeger is german for hunter... don't you feel more badass now everytime you take a shot of jagermeister which is German for MASTER hunter???? Yeah, me neither.)
One reason I was actually looking forward to this movie was a cast that wasn't loaded with big names but rather just recognizeable faces. This was a successful formula for a lot of big sci-fi/fantasy films like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. Charlie Hunnam plays the obligatory "washed up hero who can't cut it anymore" who is led by Idris Elba (stars in the best TV show you've probably never seen "LUTHER" get on Netflix to check that out immediately) and of course Charlie Day straight out of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
The acting overall is OK. There are definitely some lines of dialogue that make you roll your eyes and shake your head a.k.a everything said by japanese actress Rinko Kukuchi (yikes) but I almost feel that this was done intentionally. I know that sounds stupid but when you think of old monster movies from the 1950's and 60's, the acting is terrible but many of those films are held in high regard and I feel that the director (Guillermo Del Toro of "Pans Labyrinth" and the "Hellboy" movies) was paying homage to that style of filmmaking. Elba I think benefits the most from this film and will be the next movie star. He has great screen presence and delivers a pre-final battle speech almost on par with Bill Pullman's "Independence Day" speech as the president. That is a BIG "almost" by the way. Bill Pullman being an Oneonta grad I gotta show him some love there.
The action/effects are there which is why you are paying to see this movie in the first place. It can be hard to follow at times because it is difficult to focus on two giant things punching and fighting each other especially in the ocean (and for some reason it is always during a storm...I guess fighting on a clear weather day is a no no) Having the right mindset is key going into a film like this. If you are expecting something that will leave you thinking after you leave then this ain't the flick for you. If you are looking for something solid with cool action and effects....a "summer movie" then you're golden.
